Architectural heritage
Ljubljana is renowned for its amazing architectural appearance. Get to know the famous architectural works from different periods of history, each contributing its share to the uniqueness of the city as a whole.
After the earthquake of 1511, Ljubljana was rebuilt in the Baroque style, which is still evident in the appearance of the city's famous churches, fountains and other monuments. In the first decade of the 20th century, it was the Viennese Art Nouveau that left an indelible mark on Ljubljana, also through original architectural solutions provided by local architects, such as Maks Fabiani and Ivan Vurnik.
The city owes its unique appearance also to the internationally renowned Ljubljana-born architect Jože Plečnik and his pupils, the latter active after the Second World War. The building, which personified the modern pre-Second World War architecture in Ljubljana was the famous Skyscraper, designed by Vladimir Šubic. Over the last few decades, a number of important tiles in the mosaic of Ljubljana have been contributed by renowned contemporary architects such as Boris Podrecca, Jurij Sadar & Boštjan Vuga, and several others.
