Flores in Colores: Rare Antique Prints from the Franciscan Library in Novo Mesto - historical exhibition
The exhibition Flores in Colores brings together valuable 16th century books and prints illustrating the respectable history of the Franciscan Library in the Slovenian town of Novo Mesto. It includes interactive displays offering an insight into the spirit of the time.
Since the establishment of Novo Mesto's Franciscan Monastery, its library has been collecting historical materials including, among other things, valuable antique prints dating from the 16th century. The exhibition shows the Novo Mesto area and the entire Province of Carniola as being at the heart of the Humanist Renaissance Europe.
Last year, the Franciscan Monastery celebrated the 540th anniversary of the Franciscans' arrival in Novo Mesto, and the Franciscan Order the 800th anniversary of its foundation. To mark the two anniversaries, the Archives of the Republic of Slovenia restored a unique copy of a hand-coloured Renaissance pharmacopeia by Hieronymus Bock, dating from the middle of the 16th century (1556-1572). The copy is included in the exhibition.
