A Step into History – From the Middle Ages to Modern Science
The excursion includes visits to two famous museums: the Museum of Christianity, housed in the Stična Monastery, and the museum in Bogenšperk Castle, once the home of the famous Slovenian scientist and polymath Janez Vajkard Valvasor (1641-1693).
The Stična Monastery is inhabited by Cistercian monks, but the part of it housing the Museum of Christianity is open to the public. The Bogenšperk Castle, one of the most beautiful castles in Slovenia, houses several interesting museum collections. Besides the Valvasor Collection, it displays collections dedicated to folk superstition, traditional costumes of Slovenia, geodesy, hunting, and minerals.
On your way back you will stop at the magnificent Church of St. Martin in the village of Šmartno pri Litiji and in the small town of Litija, once an important ferry port on the river Sava.
