Ljubljana is the finalist for the prestigious WTM responsible tourism award 2017
Ljubljana was ranked among the 12 finalists for the prestigious award in the field of responsible tourism. The winner will be announced on November 8, 2017 in the framework of the opening of the world's most important World Travel Market.
The jury had evaluated several projects. The fact that Ljubljana was the European Green Capital 2016 certainly contributed to the ranking. Now we only need to wait until the Awards ceremony at World Travel Market London to discover who this year’s chosen leaders are.
Application also included following a responsible tourism policy (Ljubljana was first Slovenian destination to receive a golden certificate in the Green Scheme of Slovenian Tourism); management of tourist flows, creation and promotion of new attractive areas outside the city centre in order to loosen the pressure of visitors on the main sights and to obtain pleasant living for the citizens; active participation in development and promotion of sustainable mobility options; organized procurement and distribution of local food and drinks via the Green Supply Chains system; and assistance in gaining and obtaining environmental certificates for accommodation providers. It was neccessary to present the measurement system and the results as well.
The Responsible Tourism Awards focus on the contributions made by tourism businesses and organisations and by destinations – in order to recognise those who are making a difference. The change makers, those leading the way to make tourism more sustainable by taking responsibility for driving down the negative impacts of tourism and increasing the positive impacts. This year’s global Responsible Tourism Awards are focused on tourism’s contribution to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.
