Kurešček is an 833-metre high hill with a lookout point. It is well known as a pilgrimage centre with a church of the Holy Mother of God (Cerkev Matere božje). Kurešček's original church was a famous monument of Baroque architecture built on the model of late Baroque hall churches. After it burnt down in 1970, a new church was built on its site in 1992 and the statue of Our Lady Queen of Peace from the original Baroque church was brought back from the village of Želimlje, where it was kept after the fire. The name Kurešček, derived from a Slovenian word for "making fire", is reminiscent of Turkish times, when beacon fires were lit on top of hills to warn of Turkish attacks.
