Top historical museums in Ljubljana and its surroundings
Discover the rich heritage of diverse history, from the 60,000-year-old Neanderthal flute, which is the oldest musical instrument in the world, to Tito's limos in the Technical Museum of Slovenia in Bistra.
Museums in Ljubljana and its surroundings keep a number of important prehistoric finds. In addition to the aforementioned Divje Babe flute in the National Museum of Slovenia, do not miss the remains of the ancient culture of Pile-dwellers (Koliščarji) from Ljubljana Marshes. Among them is also the oldest wooden wheel with an axis in the world, which is kept by the City Museum of Ljubljana and is there occasionally on display.
The My Ljubljanica River (Moja LJubljanica) Exhibition in Vrhnika displays a collection of archaeological finds from the Ljubljanica River, which, in addition to the Pile-dwellers, includes also the remains from the Roman period. The legacy of the Roman city of Emona has been partly preserved in Ljubljana and is on display in three open-air archaeological parks.
