"March along Barbed Wire" (May)
The march called "March along Barbed Wire" was first organized in 1957. It is almost 35 km long route around Ljubljana, where between the Second World War the wire fence of Italian and later on the German occupiers was and is therefore called “March along barbed wire”. Besides the memory of the liberation of Ljubljana (9th May 1945) the event also wants to promote a healthy lifestyle and encourage people to do something for themselves. In the last decade, the number of participants (who decide whether to march or race in a three-member team run) is getting bigger and bigger. Every year the event is organized in early May, at the end of the week closest to 9th May, when the Municipality of Ljubljana celebrates Day of Peace (former Victory Day). From the day we enter to the European Union this day is also celebrated as Europe Day.
Marathon Franja BTC City
This is a recreational cycling competition that starts in BTC City. The longest route is 156 km long, half marathon 97 km, for children 1,5 km. Marathon Franja was premiered on 22 July 1982. Organizers back then decided to name it after World War II hidden hospital (now protected as a war monument) which the marathon passes on its way, thus paying tribute to the bravery of medical personnel, taking care of wounded Partisans and allied armed forces.
Ljubljana Beach Volley Challenge
Hot sand, happy players in swimsuit and volleyball. We are not in California but in the centre of Ljubljana. Together with hot dance rhythms and an attractive location, visitors and competitors can really feel the “beach in the middle of the city”, and it is increasing its popularity over the years. In the last few years, Ljubljana Beach Volley Challenge has been upgraded to an international event and is placed on the calendar of the international CEV association. The sun, fun, top volleyball and a diverse accompanying program give a seal to the beach volleyball tournament in the Slovenian capital.
3X3 Challenger (August)
The Ljubljana Congress Square is one of the most spectacular and beautiful venues in the entire series of world basketball 3×3. Day and night scenes in the city centre are impressive! In order to connect the heartbeat of the city and basketball 3×3, there will be no shortage of activities with an urban lifestyle. Hip-hop, rap, graffiti, street artists are just some of the elements that create the ‘beat of the street’. The event, which took place in the elite international society, hosts the world’s best teams, and Slovenian players are very successful among them. Olympics present dreams for many basketball players, so the 3×3 basketball is all the more attractive, as it offers this option.
Volkswagen Ljubljana Marathon 2019 (October)
The Ljubljana Marathon is the largest running event held in Slovenia. Its great international recognition is largely due to its highly attractive course, running through the streets of Ljubljana.
