Waterside Cycling Route
The river served as the city’s principal commercial artery and supply route from Roman times until the arrival of the railway in the mid-nineteenth century. The architect Jože Plečnik left a decisive mark on the city with his arrangement of the river embankments in the old town centre, designing tree-lined promenades and creating or renovating a series of bridges over the river and its tributaries.

The river Ljubljanica and its bridges
Today, the Ljubljanica owes its distinctive appearance to the architect Jože Plečnik, who designed the old city centre's river embankments, landscaped tree-lined riverside walks, including the well known weeping willow-lined terraced walk alongside the Trnovski pristan embankment, and built or renovated several of the city's bridges, including the famous Trnovo Bridge, Cobblers' Bridge and Triple Bridge.

Head along the right bank of the river, on the bank-strengthening fortifications designed by the noteworthy architect Plečnik. You’ll pass many of the buildings he created and which make Ljubljana so unique. At the so-called “Špica”, cross back over the river towards the city centre, passing the baroque Town Hall.
