As part of the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Embassy of Ireland in Ljubljana and International World Heritage Day on Saturday, 18 April, the Embassy invites you to visit an exhibition on Ireland’s archaeological heritage.

Monuments in Focus, an exhibition on Gallus Embankment in the centre of Ljubljana, presents the beauty of Ireland’s ancient past. The photographs offer a new perspective on Ireland’s ancient monuments, highlighting both their resilience and fragility.

The exhibition takes visitors on a journey through striking scenes of Ireland’s cultural landscape, where nature, history and time intertwine. Among the featured motifs are sites in Ireland inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, bearing witness to the rich heritage and universal value of these places.

Photography plays an important role in this context, not only as an artistic expression, but also as a tool for documenting the condition of monuments, their conservation, and for monitoring the impacts of erosion and increasingly frequent extreme weather events. Ireland actively collaborates with international partners, including Slovenia, in safeguarding and protecting our shared cultural heritage for future generations.

The exhibition also reveals many parallels between Ireland and Slovenia, from karst landscapes to prehistoric structures and ancient burial sites, which in both countries testify to the deep roots of human presence. Slovenia, too, boasts remarkable heritage, including the Škocjan Caves, which are inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
