Mend your umbrella

Do you have a damaged yet well-loved umbrella which you’d hate to throw away? Did it get broken during your stay in Ljubljana? Or are you simply curious to find out why umbrellas are still being repaired despite the huge choice of new, inexpensive umbrellas?

Umbrellas everywhere you look... The workshop in the old town center still draws many people who would rather have their umbrella mended than buy a new one. This has allowed Marija Lah, the last umbrella repairer in Ljubljana, to carry on her family trade with considerable success.

Her colorful and compelling story, and inexhaustible love for her work, will convince you that umbrellas are worth mending if they can be done. You’ll also learn what not to do if you want to keep an umbrella in good condition, and playful twirling on the shoulders is strongly discouraged! You’ll also find out whether an old umbrella can be turned into a shopping bag or a colorful apron. In the workshop, you’ll have the chance to try your hand at umbrella mending under Marija Lah’s expert guidance and discover the complexity and intricacy of the craft. You can either bring your own damaged umbrella or find one at the workshop.

At the old umbrella workshop, opened almost sixty years ago by Marija Lah’s father, you’ll thus become a part of an ongoing story about a trade that’s now rare in the world. Because of this, umbrellas are even sent to Ljubljana for repair from abroad.

This is a fun and instructive experience, to be remembered every time you open your mended umbrella.
