The atmosphere of the festive December in Ljubljana is traditionally also marked by the Christmas cribs depicting the birth of Jesus. Below you will find some of the best locations in and around Ljubljana where you can admire the nativity scene displays.

Every church in Ljubljana sets up a nativity crib during Christmas. The largest and the most beautiful one is traditionally on display at the Franciscan Church at the Prešernov Trg square. We also recommend Christmas cribs at the churches of Dravlje and Rakovnik.

The straw nativity scene is a unique handmade work of Anton Kravanja, an amateur artist. The nativity scene is very special because the figures depict the natural size of the characters.

Nativity Scene at Ljubljana Castle

The wooden nativity scene at the Castle Chapel, which also comes in natural size, is the work of Miro Rismondo, a sculptor who is better known for his ice sculptures displayed at the Land of Ice (Ledena dežela).

Christmas Story in Ljubljana ZOO

The Ljubljana ZOO organises a musical and visual event entitled Christmas Story, which involves employees of the ZOO, animals (sheep, donkey, ox and camels) and musical guests. The Christmas Story takes place in front of the farmer’s house.

Visitors’ favourites are the camels adorned with holiday decorations whereas the children especially enjoy the time after the event, when they can play among the hearths, shepherds, their animals and meet the holy family in the barn.

Tickets for the event also include a visit to the ZOO.

Spectacular Live Nativity Scene in Postojna Cave

Only an hour drive from Ljubljana you can experience one of the most magical Christmas events. The live nativity scene in the unique natural atmosphere of the Postojna Cave is a first-rate spectacle where numerous actors and renowned singers accompanied by light effects depict the biblical story of the birth of Jesus. The live nativity scene is performed in the days around Christmas and there are usually five replays. The number of tickets is limited; the tickets are sold at the Postojna Cave website.
