Ljubljana has successfully passed the sustainability assessment within the framework of the Slovenian Tourist Board’s Green Scheme of Slovenian Tourism and has once again obtained the highest sustainability certificate, the Slovenia Green Destination Platinum label.

This achievement is the result of the coordinated and long-term efforts of the entire City of Ljubljana, both at the strategic and operational levels, as well as close cooperation with public institutions, the tourism industry, and other stakeholders. The renewal of the platinum label confirms that the city is systematically developing sustainable tourism, with clear emphasis on protecting natural resources, preserving cultural heritage, and actively engaging the tourism sector in sustainable practices.

Within the pillars Nature and Landscape and Culture and Tradition, the Slovenian capital fulfilled all criteria and achieved the highest possible score. The evaluators also highly rated Ljubljana’s efforts in the areas of Destination Management and Business Operations of Tourism Enterprises and Communication, reflecting the city’s high-quality governance and well-considered tourism development.

The assessment also confirmed the high level of systematic stakeholder engagement: Ljubljana regularly provides tourism stakeholders with training on sustainability topics, ranging from the responsible use of water and energy to waste management and reducing carbon footprints. As an example of good practice, the evaluators highlighted the project Implementation of a Zero Waste Strategy among Ljubljana Hotel Providers, which strengthens hotel employees’ knowledge, raises awareness about waste prevention, and lays the foundations for the long-term reduction of the environmental and climate footprint of Ljubljana’s hotel sector.

Green Scheme of Slovenian Tourism

The Green Scheme of Slovenian Tourism is the Slovenian Tourist Board’s national certification programme which, under the Slovenia Green brand, brings together efforts for sustainable development in Slovenian tourism and provides destinations and tourism providers with concrete tools for assessing and improving their sustainability performance. The standard follows the criteria of the international Green Destinations Foundation, which are also recognised by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council, the organisation that manages global standards for sustainable tourism.

Obtaining the platinum label also directly supports Ljubljana’s broader climate ambitions, particularly the goals within the 100 Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities by 2030 Mission, where sustainable tourism represents an important component of the transition towards a low-carbon community and environment. Last year, Ljubljana was also ranked among the top 40 cities in the world for the first time within the international benchmarking programme Global Destination Sustainability Index, confirming its position among the world’s leading sustainable destinations.
