Chicago is based on the 1926 play of the same name by the journalist Maurine Dallas Watkins. Music was written by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb. 

Chicago is a tale full of intrigue, love, deception, betrayal, rivalry, and friendship. Naïve Roxie Hart, who wants nothing more than to become a famous dancer, and the established cabaret star Velma Kelly are the main characters in the musical. They are both accused of murdering their lovers. The cunning lawyer Billy Flynn helps them to escape the death sentence. All the characters in the musical are based on real people and their stories.
