GR Expands both Space and Opportunities
The new premises are directly connected to the GR and have been named, like the other halls, after the poems of the greatest Slovenian poet, Dr. France Prešeren. The Apel complex, spreading across four levels and a total of 12,892 square metres, is divided into four sections: Sonet Hall, ground floor (1,636 sqm) Gazela Hall, 1st floor (2,211 sqm) Oda Hall, 1st basement (3,692 sqm) Meduza Hall, 2nd basement (5,353 sqm) This almost doubles GR's previous indoor capacities, which now comprise over 26,000 square metres of net space.

Plečnik's original designs of the early 1930s were later considerably revised and the Barrier was only built between 1939 and 1944. © Dunja Wedam Roman town walls in Mirje In the 1930s, the town wall complex in Mirje was restored to a design by the architect Jože Plečnik. His additions to the surviving Roman walls include a stone pyramid, upward extensions of the walls, the gates to the wall complex, an arched vault covered in stone remains from nearby Roman buildings, and a park inside the walls.

The new main bronze door was created in 1996 by sculptor Tone Demšar to mark 1250 years of Christianity in our country and in honour of the Pope’s visit to Ljubljana, while sculptor Mirsad Begić carved the history of the Ljubljana Diocese on the side door. Town Hall The first building erected on this site in 1484 was rebuilt in 1718 to the plans of local master builder Gregor Maček. It has preserved a number of memorials to Ljubljana’s past, including the Hercules and Narcissus fountains.

It was designed by architect Ivan Vurnik in 1921 and is considered as one of the finest examples of national style.
