The history of the Ljubljana University Medical Centre (UKC Ljubljana) began 240 years ago, in 1786, with the founding of the first Civil Hospital in Ljubljana, located in the Ajdovščina area.
The construction of the new Clinical Centre building – one of the most extensive construction projects in Slovenian healthcare – took place between 1966 and 1975. The building was officially opened on 29 November 1975, marking a major milestone: individual hospitals merged into a single institution capable of addressing even the most complex medical challenges.
Today, the centre unites clinical practice, research and education. As Slovenia’s central hospital, it provides a learning environment for students and young professionals whose knowledge will shape the future of medicine. Every research project and every moment of learning contribute to better outcomes, faster patient recovery and the advancement of the entire healthcare system. UKC Ljubljana is a place where ideas become practice, and knowledge becomes hope for future generations.
With 240 years of tradition and 50 years of knowledge, innovation and dedication, they continue to look ahead. UKC Ljubljana remains committed to improving people’s health, introducing new treatment methods and strengthening empathy, research and education—every single day.
»Over the past five decades, UKC Ljubljana has continuously grown, developed, and strengthened its professional reputation both at home and abroad. With nearly 9,000 employees, it is the largest healthcare institution in the country, striving for excellence in providing healthcare not only for the Ljubljana region, but for all of Slovenia. Doctors, healthcare professionals, and all staff involved in patient care deliver highly demanding, top-quality medical services.«
