How to participate

1. Choose and visit a place from our list.
2. Take a picture of what impressed you the most.
3. Post the photo on Instagram and show it to your friends and family. Don’t forget to use the hashtag #CentralSlovenia and to mark the location.
4. Show your post at the indicated point at your destination and you will receive a locally-inspired gift.

10 trips to central Slovenia

1. Polhov Gradec Mansion

Head out to Polhov Gradec. Polhov Gradec is the perfect starting point for hiking trips to the Polhov Gradec Dolomites and an excellent place to learn about history. At the Polhov Gradec Mansion you will learn about Count Blagaj, an enlightened patron and botanist, and visit the Museum of Post and Telecommunications.

Nina or Ajda from the Polhov Gradec Mansion will present you with your gift. The Mansion is open from Tuesday to Friday and on Sundays and holidays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Please note that the Mansion is closed on Saturdays and Mondays.

2. Velika planina

Strike out to Velika planina to enjoy the fresh air and experience life in another day and age. Velika planina is appealing to both mountaineers and those just wishing to take a walk, visit the herdsmen’s village with its typical wooden huts, and see the museum collection at Preskar’s Hut. In addition, visitors can indulge in exquisite “štruklji” rolls with cottage cheese filling at the Zeleni rob guest house or taste the traditional “trnič” cheese and home-made “ruševec” – a schnapps made from pines.

Ask for your gift at the Zeleni rob guest house. Open from Monday to Thursday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.,
from Friday to Sunday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. In September, the guest house will be open every day until 6 p.m., starting in October the guest house will be open until 4 p.m. on weekdays, and 6 p.m. on weekends.

3. Županova jama Cave

Discover the underground world by visiting Županova jama Cave, the most beautiful cave of the Dolenjska region. The Cave is threaded with 600m of paths leading through six major chambers and past a number of abysses, tunnels, various kinds of dripstones, shallow calcareous sinter pools, and ice dripstones in winter. There are two more places worth visiting in the proximity: Tabor nad Cerovim and Radensko polje.

You will receive your gift on the surface, namely at the vending booth at the Cave entrance. Open every Saturday and Sunday at 3 p.m. You can visit the Cave at any time by prior arrangement (in this case a minimum of 5 visitors applies). Call 00386 41 407 705.

4. Lake Zbilje

Sometimes a relaxing view of nature is all you need. At such times you should head out to Lake Zbilje. If you feel particularly adventurous, you can rent a boat with paddles at the local boathouse, otherwise you can simply enjoy one of the coffee-houses on the bank or visit the playground with your children. If you wish to stretch your legs, you can head out on a hike to Smlednik Castle.

5. Vočji Potok Arboretum

Photos of flowers are always marvellous and there’s no better place to admire the countless types of flora than the biggest Slovene botanic park, Vočji Potok Arboretum, which makes for a pleasant trip all year around. The Arboretum has no less than 3,500 different types of plants. In addition, children will enjoy the park’s dinosaurs and whales.

6. The tower at Planina Hill

Visit Vrhnika and hike up to the wooden tower at Planina Hill to admire the breath-taking view of central Slovenia and beyond. On sunny days, you will be able to see Triglav. On your way to the tower or upon returning we recommend you visit the “Moja Ljubljanica Museum” in Vrhnika, a new museum filled with interesting content.

You can pick up your gift at the Planina nad Vrhniko refuge every Friday, Saturday, Sunday and holiday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

7. Geoss Adventure Park

Are you active and eager for adrenaline? In this case a visit to the biggest Slovene adventure park, located in Slivna, is a must for you! Geoss Adventure Park offers 6 climbing routes amidst the tree-tops and 91 climbing obstacles of various heights. The easiest route is suitable for children over the age of four years.

Ask for your gift at the reception desk of the Adventure park. Opening hours vary according to the season and are indicated on the website .

8. Bogenšperk Castle

Bogenšperk Castle is considered one of the most beautiful castles in Slovenia and one of the country's most important cultural monuments. Take a walk in the castle and explore the life of its owner, the Slovene polymath, scientist, and cosmopolite Janez Vajkard Valvasor. Worth the visit!

9. Straw Plaiting Museum in Domžale

Did you know Domžale is famous for its straw plaiting tradition? At the Straw Plaiting Museum in the centre of Domžale you will learn everything there is to know about this artisanal handicraft. The museum features a collection of straw hats, straw plaiting accessories, tools, and devices, along with photos, documents, and stories of people. Ethnography aficionados will enjoy the Menačenk's Homestead, which authentically reflects the life of rural craftsmen's families in the past.

Ask for your gift at the Straw Plaiting Museum. The Museum is open from Tuesday to Friday from 10 to 12 a.m. and from 5 to 7 p.m. On Saturdays, the museum in open from 10 to 12 a.m. Please note that the museum is closed on holidays, Sundays and Mondays.

10. Paddling from Ljubljana Marshes to the Triple Bridge

There is much more to Ljubljana than its city centre. You are kindly invited to explore the city from a different point of view by joining the paddling trip on Ljubljanica river which ends in the city centre. The trip lasts for two hours and is suitable for children over 10 years of age. The price includes the paddling equipment rental, the transfer, a guide and the organization of the trip.
