Short but sweet: Stari Grad and its amazing views of the Alps
I’d driven past it many times, always towards jagged mountain peaks of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, and so it wasn’t until two years ago when I finally decided to visit Stari Grad with my family. As it turned out, it’s one of the coolest and most scenic short hikes in Slovenia. It’s a family-friendly 35-minute trail that teaches about wildlife and nature, and ends with amazing views over the Alps and Kamnik.

K2: FROM VRHNIKA TO PLANINA AND ZAPLANA
You initially ascend towards Planina on a quiet asphalt road, which is eventually replaced by a wide gravel forest road. Most of the ride proceeds in the shelter of the forest. At Planina, you are greeted by a mountain lodge and a 22 m high lookout tower, which offers a wonderful view of the Ljubljana basin, the Ljubljana Marshes, the Polhov Gradec and Krim hills, and the hills towards Notranjska and, in clear weather, the view reaches as far as the Alps.
