Finally, you will be greeted in the courtyard by the man who can take credit for the fact that the castle is today owned by the city – Mayor Ivan Hribar purchased the castle from the state authorities of the time in 1905. The castle has changed through the centuries, as has its role, but there is no doubt that it has remained a symbol of the city.

My alternative Ljubljana
During the daytime, it’s an excellent café which also offers an interesting programme of social events, lectures, and panel and public discussions. Also, it’s the only comic shop in the city centre – and (of particular interest to me), a rich source of Slovenian craft beer. Right! We’re heading towards the famous and always surprising Metelkova quarter, but there’s another stop on the way… The Old Power Station Ljubljana went electric in 1898, and for that, Ljubljana City Power Station was constructed.

The start of the trail is marked by an introductory explanatory trailhead board with a description of the Ljubljana Marshes Landscape Park and the trail, and a map. Below it is an arrow pointing you straight ahead along a wide gravel road. There are nine explanatory boards, including the introductory one, which introduce the rich natural and cultural heritage of the area.
