Ever since our baby boy was born, we do all kind of trips around Slovenia. Living near Ljubljana, we really like the fact that there are so many choices and beautiful places for a walk close by. One of our favorite destinations is also Volčji Potok Arboretum.

Volcji potok

Most popular during its spring flower shows

Volčji Potok Arboretum is perfect for everyone enjoying nature, as this 80 hectare large estate offers peace and quiet with a perfect setting and views over to the Kamnik-Savinja Alps. The Arboretum is actually most visited horticultural facility in Slovenia and in 1950 was even declared as cultural and natural heritage of national importance.

Most visitors like to visit Arboretum during the spring flowers shows, where they can walk among millions of daffodils, colorful tulips and other spring flowers. But even though you are visiting Ljubljana in the summer, autumn or winter,a trip to the Arboretum will not leave you indifferent. There are also some greenhouses on display year-round, which are home to cactuses and orchids.

A perfect place for families

The Arboretum is a popular place also among families. Visiting the park with kids will sure bring joy on their faces. The Arboretum offers great playing areas– from simple swings, trampolines to a hedge labyrinth, fairy-tale land made out of straw, dinosaurs and whales.

Take a selfie with dinosaurs or whales

Oh yes, dinosaurs and whales! In fact, there are 13 dinosaurs and 10 whales in the Arboretum on display, but don't be too scared. Even though the dinosaurs make noises and can move their heads and tails, and whales are up to 25 meters long, they are not real, except if you have a vivid imagination. These amazing creatures are more or less there for kids, but they put a shine on adults as well.

A cup of coffee tastes better surrounded with nature

If dinosaurs or whales are just not your thing, relax and take your time in the charming Arboretum outdoor café, tucked away between tall trees. Order a cup of coffee or indulge yourself with an ice-cream cup, frape or a healthy and freshly squeezed juice.

Join your visit with an exploration of Kamnik

Just 5 kilometers from the Arboretum is a beautiful town Kamnik – one of the oldest towns in Slovenia. The vicinity with the Arboretum makes it a great combination to join nature with history. Kamnik is a small town, but its picturesque old center bursts with historical buildings, such as two castles and Franciscan monastery. To get the real local feel, we suggest visiting Kamnik on Tuesday or Saturday, when there’s local market, selling everything from home grown veggies, fruit, meat and dairy products. As we like to say “You cannot get to know a place before tasting it!”

The Volčji Potok Arboretum can easily be reached from Ljubljana by bus. Watch out for Ljubljana-Kamnik line, which also stops at the entrance of the Arboretum. The park is opened daily from 8am to 8pm.

When exploring Slovenia there is a lot to be said about the smaller towns, often offering more than meets the eye. Vrhnika, showcasing its history and nature in its brand new Ljubljanica River museum, is a good case in point. If you are a history lover, the ancient artifacts along with the story of how Vrhnika is transforming itself these days, will make for a compelling half-day trip.
