Morostig, House of Nature and Piles

Morostig is a must-visit site where you can learn about the details of the pile-dwelling (or lake-dwelling) period and the prehistoric settlements around the Alps, which are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You can explore an exhibition, a themed trail, and a reconstruction of a pile-dwelling settlement.

The exhibition at the Morostig House consists of nine thematic units presenting important research findings about the Ljubljana Marshes and the pile-dwellings that once stood there. You will discover the rich biodiversity of the unique marshland landscape, which is part of the European Natura 2000 network.

The Morostig Thematic Trail winds through the Ljubljana Marshes and ends at the reconstructed pile-dwelling settlement. This walk will inspire visitors interested not only in the history and views of the area, but also in its botanical and zoological features and diverse habitats.

The reconstruction of five huts and one dugout canoe brings countless fascinating stories to life. The pile-dwellers may not have lived like us, but many aspects of their everyday lives still echo in our own. They were metallurgists, weavers, potters, friends, collaborators, enemies, and creators. Where did they come from, and why did they settle here? What opportunities did the settlement provide? Were they ever endangered by anything? Did they travel anywhere? What did they gather and hunt? All these questions and more will be answered at the Morostig pile-dwelling settlement.
