The Slovenian School Museum, open since 1898, offers an interesting insight into the history of the educational system and pedagogy in Slovenia. The development of the educational system through centuries, illustrated by the museum’s permanent collection, is placed within the context of a broader cultural history.

The Slovenian School Museum boasts a library holding more than 55,000 titles, including a large number of rare pedagogical books written in the 18th and 19th centuries and several incunabula, early printed books published before 1500, such as Rudimenta grammatices. The museum also houses reconstructions of historical classrooms and an educational room where children can learn about gardening and medicinal herb cultivation.

School lesson from the times of our grandparents

Group visitors to the Slovenian School Museum can attend a typical turn-of-the-20th-century school lesson taught by a strict male or female teacher using historical teaching materials and educational approaches. The lesson, which is a great fun experience, is available in Slovenian and English. A prior appointment is required.

The lessons are taught to a minimum of seven people and a maximum of 30 adults or 40 children. To arrange a lesson, send an email to prijavassm@guest.arnes.si.
