The Plant Shelter provides a new home for plants that have become unwanted for various reasons. After careful care, they are offered for adoption to those who wish to nurture them. The adoption process is symbolic—it includes signing an adoption contract and paying a small adoption fee.
This project is highly interdisciplinary, merging elements from art, ecology, and social engagement. It aims to introduce these topics to a wide audience that might not otherwise engage with them. Beyond plant care, the shelter also functions as an artistic project. The founders explore plants through various artistic media, primarily drawing, and encourage others to creatively connect with their green companions.
About the Founders of Zavetišče za zavržene rastline
The founders of the Zavitišče za zavržene rastline, Anamari Hrup (1978) and Eva Jera Hanžek (1984), are both academically trained painters, which makes artistic expression an integral part of the shelter's work. They connect with the plants—wards of the shelter—through various artistic media, primarily drawing, and encourage adopters to do the same. Over the years, as part of the shelter’s ongoing activities, the founders have also been creating and recording prose and poetry inspired by the green wards and their unique life stories.
