MMM STORIES: Barut Brewing and Blending

A fondness for yeasts, which they studied in detail at the Department for Microbe Biotechnology at Ljubljana’s Biotechnical Faculty, inspires their walks through the nearby forests where they use small knives to collect samples of microorganisms to use for their new brews. They then carefully analyse the eating habits of the chosen yeasts during the process of mixed fermentation, after which the beers are left to mature for at least six months in oak barrels, preferably barrels that were once used for storing wine.

Orle (545 m)

It’s covered by a dense forest canopy and crisscrossed by numerous well-maintained and waymarked paths. It offers a wealth of recreational opportunities: for walking, hiking, running, and cycling. Orle, which you reach via a pleasant hike across Golovec, is a popular destination for locals, and many visit it especially for a meal at the excellent inn, with the experience made even better by a splendid view from the wooden lookout tower above it.

Janče (792m)

Towards Janče, meadows, forest trails and gravel roads, as well as partly quiet asphalt roads, will lead you on your way. You’ll also pass by farms, making this walk a lovely blend of natural and cultural landscapes. The views of the surrounding hills will keep you entertained along the way. Near the end of the ascent, you’ll see a sign reading “Welcome to the Land of Strawberries – Fruit Road Between Javor and Janče” (Dobrodošli v deželi jagod – Sadna cesta med Javorom in Jančami), with local farms offering fresh seasonal fruit.
