Old castle above Kamnik (577 m)

The trail quickly climbs steeply along a well-made forest path, first along the forest edge, then deeper into the woods on comfortable forest trails for most of the ascent. There are a few flatter sections along the way. The end of the climb is truly impressive: you enter the viewing platform next to the castle ruins through well-preserved tall castle walls.

Roaming the flowering meadows in the Ljubljana Marshes

The first mountain trail signpost for your hiking destination can be seen along the main road passing through Horjul, at the junction with a traffic sign for Koreno. Initially, you walk through the settlement, passing its most significant cultural and historical landmark, the Church of St Margaret, to reach a crossroads with the picturesque Chapel of St Joseph.

Short but sweet: Stari Grad and its amazing views of the Alps

I’d driven past it many times, always towards jagged mountain peaks of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, and so it wasn’t until two years ago when I finally decided to visit Stari Grad with my family. As it turned out, it’s one of the coolest and most scenic short hikes in Slovenia. It’s a family-friendly 35-minute trail that teaches about wildlife and nature, and ends with amazing views over the Alps and Kamnik.
