Prepared from a simple batter of eggs, flour, and milk, Jezeršek's "šmorn" is baked to a golden-yellow color, remaining immensely soft and melting in your mouth. As the most famous representative of traditional "flour-based" dishes (močnata hrana), it brings nostalgia and pure joy to the plate, which is sure to delight our youngest guests

  • Old castle above Kamnik (577 m)

The trail quickly climbs steeply along a well-made forest path, first along the forest edge, then deeper into the woods on comfortable forest trails for most of the ascent. There are a few flatter sections along the way. The end of the climb is truly impressive: you enter the viewing platform next to the castle ruins through well-preserved tall castle walls.

Among the latter, my favourite flower is the endangered leper lily, known for announcing the arrival of the spring, and, most importantly, the end of the winter in the marshes. • Short but sweet: Stari Grad and its amazing views of the Alps

I’d driven past it many times, always towards jagged mountain peaks of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, and so it wasn’t until two years ago when I finally decided to visit Stari Grad with my family. As it turned out, it’s one of the coolest and most scenic short hikes in Slovenia. It’s a family-friendly 35-minute trail that teaches about wildlife and nature, and ends with amazing views over the Alps and Kamnik.

John to visit the mystical Žička Charterhouse. This 12th-century former monastery is one of the most significant monuments of medieval architecture in the region.
