Picturesque Ascent to the “Triglav of Ljubljana”

The domed Janče hill, the highest peak in the City of Ljubljana (hence its nickname, the “Triglav of Ljubljana”), is a popular hiking destination in all seasons. Several easy marked mountain trails lead to the summit, all ending at the mountain lodge offering exceptional views of Ljubljana, the surrounding hills, and on clear days even the Slovenian Alps with the majestic Triglav.

One of the most beautiful and moderately long routes approaches Janče from Jevnica, a settlement nestled in Ljubljana’s hinterland, on the banks of the Sava River, Slovenia’s longest river. The marked mountain trail starts at the local railway station and takes you through the settlement, then winding closely past houses and across meadows into the forest. After ascending along a comfortable forest path, you’ll soon find yourself out in the open again. Towards Janče, meadows, forest trails and gravel roads, as well as partly quiet asphalt roads, will lead you on your way. You’ll also pass by farms, making this walk a lovely blend of natural and cultural landscapes. The views of the surrounding hills will keep you entertained along the way.

Near the end of the ascent, you’ll see a sign reading “Welcome to the Land of Strawberries – Fruit Road Between Javor and Janče” (Dobrodošli v deželi jagod – Sadna cesta med Javorom in Jančami), with local farms offering fresh seasonal fruit.

As you reach Janče, the path to the mountain lodge, where your ascent ends, will take you past the Church of St Nicholas (Sv. Miklavž), the patron saint of travellers. From there, you’re just a stone’s throw away from your destination.
The mountain lodge stands on the edge of a scenic hillside, where you can refresh yourself with traditional Slovenian mountain dishes such as the ričet barley stew and the jota sauerkraut stew.

Descent 1: via the ascent path.

Descent 2: if you arrived at the trailhead by train, you can return to the valley via another marked mountain trail that leads you to the settlement of Laze pri Dolskem that also has a railway station. Signposts and markings will guide you to Laze. The route from Jevnica is more varied and picturesque, offering a pleasant loop hike. During the blueberry season, the forested slopes above Laze are full of these delicious wild fruits.
