    The lower end of the square is lined by Auersperg Palace (Turjaška palača), once owned by the House of Auersperg, dukes of Carniola. The Palace, now housing the City Museum of Ljubljana, was built from a number of older houses in 1642 and renovated several times since. Its front façade, adorned with pilasters and a classical entrance portal, hides an arched Baroque courtyard.

  • Ljubljanica Sluice Gate

    © Matej Kastelic © Dunja Wedam © Dunja Wedam The length of the Ljubljanica river embankments landscaped by the architect Jože Plečnik extends all the way to the Ljubljanica River Barrier, located by the Cukrarna building, where Plečnik envisaged a monumental triumphal arch in order to symbolically mark the point where the river leaves the city. Plečnik's original designs of the early 1930s were later considerably revised and the Barrier was only built between 1939 and 1944.

  • Cobblers' Bridge

    Like Plečnik's Trnovo Bridge, the present Cobblers' Bridge was conceived as a broad balustraded platform connecting two different parts of the city. It was made of artificial stone like another of Plečnik's creations, the Triple Bridge. The characteristic appearance of the Cobblers' Bridge is due to its balustrades with short balusters and tall, different sized pillars topped with stone balls.
