Carter’s Evening at Gostilna Vodičar - Taste the Heritage of Grosuplje

In the past, furmani (wagoners) would rest in inns along their routes, take care of their horses, enjoy hearty homemade meals, and often strike a deal or two. In that same spirit, the menu of the Furman Evening will feature traditional, authentic dishes from Grosuplje, prepared according to old recipes but elevated with quality ingredients that add a modern touch.

Menu:

• Starter: homemade bread with venison salami and lard spread, sauerkraut salad
• Main course: Furman’s meal – homemade corn mush made from a traditional corn variety, sauerkraut with cracklings, and house-made sausage
• Dessert: apple strudel with meringue – the so-called “strudel with a hat” – and crispy fried pastries known as “pohanje”

The evening will also include a guided tour and presentation of the local homestead, along with stories shared by the descendants of the last furman and the last wheelwright (kolar) in Grosuplje, offering a glimpse into the everyday life and trades of the old wagoners — from wheelmaking and blacksmithing to other traditional crafts.

The event is organized by the Grosuplje Tourism Institute in cooperation with Gostilna Vodičar and chef Mihael Ambrožič, who passionately revives the flavors of the past and reinterprets dishes once enjoyed by furmani in a contemporary way.
