KULKUL MOMENT: Maxi slice
There to experience on any day of the week. But not anywhere. It can only be had in Ljubljana. That moment when the cul-inary and cul-tural meet, as though made specifically for this, the most beautiful city. The kulkul moment is an unforgettable experience people carry with them for a long time thereafter. What does culture taste like? What story hides behind the wonderful culinary ideas?
The Emona or Maxi slice?
Succulent slices made of several layers of walnut cake sponge, filled with a rich vanilla custard and covered in dark chocolate, go by several different names in Ljubljana and boast a rich history. This remarkable pastry is pure nostalgia on a plate, transporting us deep into the splendid past of Ljubljana cafés.
Once famous as the most popular pastry of the legendary Ljubljana confectionery Petriček on Cankarjeva cesta, and later remembered by some as the Emona slice that was served at the soup kitchen under Ljubljana Castle. Through the decades, several names were attached to the pastry, often including the name of the shop where they were prepared: Tivoli, Bellevue, Zmajček or Maxi slice. For half a century already, Maxi Patisserie has been famous for its legendary walnut Maxi slice, which the renowned patisserie chef Avgust Plestenjak used to serve for the British royal family at Balmoral Castle in Scotland.
Tip: The Emona/Maxi slice is a vintage dessert to be indulged in before or after exploring the 2,000-year heritage of Ljubljana. A series of preserved remnants of Roman Emona, Ljubljana’s predecessor, can be viewed at the National Museum of Slovenia and the City Museum of Ljubljana, with the latter also operating the following outdoor locations: the Early Christian Centre Archaeological Park and the Emona House Archaeological Park.
