Ljubljana Marshes

The Ljubljana Marshes are a picturesque and historically rich landscape stretching south-west from the Slovenian capital of Ljubljana. This nature reserve, which covers approximately 160 square kilometres, is a treasure trove of biodiversity, cultural heritage and natural beauty. Visitors can enjoy exploring a unique combination of wetlands, meadows, woodlands and riverbeds.

Natural beauty and biodiversity

The Ljubljana Marshes are home to many rare and endangered species of plants and animals. Over 250 bird species have been documented in the area, including many endangered species such as the corn crake (Crex crex). The fauna here is also rich, with rare and protected species such as the marsh orchid, sundew and rare grasses. The Ramsar Convention lists the Ljubljana Marshes as a wetland of international importance on account of their biodiversity and ecological importance.

Cultural heritage

The Ljubljana Marshes are also an archaeologically important area. One of the most significant finds is the oldest preserved wheel with an axle in the world, which dates back to the time when the area was inhabited by pile dwellers, around 5200 BC. The pile dwellings on the Ljubljana Marshes have been placed on the UNESCO World Heritage List due to their exceptional historical value. The heritage of the pile dwellers in the Ljubljana Marshes is presented in the Morostig House of Nature and Pile Dwellings. In addition to archaeological finds, the marshes are also home to numerous cultural and historical sites, including the Church of St Michael in the Marsh designed by renowned architect Jože Plečnik.

Outdoor activities

The Ljubljana Marshes offer numerous opportunities for outdoor recreation and relaxation. Visitors can embark on hiking or thematic trails that lead across the beautiful landscape and let them observe all its natural diversity and wonder. Cyclists will enjoy the cycling trails that connect different parts of the marshes and make it possible to explore the area on two wheels. Guided tours of the Ljubljana Marshes are offered by the Ljubljana Marsh Nature Park.
