Baroque style Ljubljana

Apart from creations by the architect Jože Plečnik, it was the Baroque that contributed most significantly to the architectural appearance of the present Ljubljana. © Dunja Wedam Numerous old city centre buildings are adorned with Baroque façades, staircases and inner courtyards. Most of the city’s famous churches were built or — in the aftermath of the earthquake of 1511 — rebuilt in the Baroque style.

A later centre of Christian life in Emona developed along the city’s western wall, parts of which are still preserved on Erjavčeva Street, next to Cankarjev dom.

According to an inscription found near Emona's eastern gate (at present-day French Revolution Square), a major construction project—likely the city wall—was completed between the autumn of 14 AD and the spring of 15 AD.

Ljubljana again makes the list of the world’s most sustainable destinations

Ljubljana first made the Global Top 100 Sustainable Destinations in 2014 and has retained its place on the list this year, making it the most decorated city for sustainable tourism achievements and the only city in the world to make the list five times.  This year the Green Destinations organisation also gave the “Best of Cities” award to Ljubljana at one of the world’s biggest and most important tourism trade fairs, ITB Berlin.
