Nestled in the heart of Ljubljana, Gornji trg is one of the city’s oldest and most enchanting districts. Its medieval urban layout blends seamlessly with Baroque, Gothic, and Renaissance elements, creating a space where history and creativity intertwine. The cobbled street, lined with 16th-century patrician houses, is a place where light and shadow dance endlessly, inviting visitors to slow down and explore.
Gornji trg slopes gently downward, its lower end brushing the Ljubljanica River while its upper reaches reach for the sky and Ljubljana Castle. It symbolises the spirit of the craftsmen, traders, and artisans who once thrived here—people who kept their feet firmly on the ground while their visions soared. Among them were saddlers, carpenters, tailors, weavers, bricklayers, tanners, sword-makers, fiddlers, hatters, organ-builders, coopers, and gunsmiths. By the mid-20th century, most of these trades had faded away, leaving behind only faint echoes of their legacy.
Yet in the new millennium, Gornji trg is experiencing a renaissance. Artisans, craftsmen, and artists of all kinds are returning, drawn by the district’s unique atmosphere. United by their hands-on craftsmanship, deep respect for tradition, and bold creativity, they have transformed Gornji trg into a thriving creative quarter—a place where the past and present coexist, and where every thread, every stroke, and every stone tells a story.
