Picturesque Karst Landscape on the Doorstep of the Capital

Take a stroll along an interesting themed trail that leads you through the scenic Radensko Polje Landscape Park near Grosuplje, not far from Ljubljana. This is the karst world – an exceptional mosaic of meadows, shrubs, forests, and intermittent lakes. The well-maintained and signposted trail takes you through a diverse landscape, and informational panels along the way will tell you why Radensko polje is such a precious natural gem.

The From the Šica River to the Hedgerow Learning Trail begins at the Frog House (Žabja hiša), Slovenia’s first nature conservation centre, located at the karst spring of the Šica River. From here, the trail follows the edge of the karst polje and passes through a settlement before reaching the only climb on the route: wooded Kopanj, the finest example of a karst inselberg in Slovenia. As you ascend, signs will direct you to the cave of St Anthony the Hermit, where you can ring a bell to make a secret wish come true. On Kopanj hill, you’ll find the Church of the Assumption of Mary and a memorial granary. For a short period, Slovenia’s greatest poet, France Prešeren, lived here.

Descending from Kopanj, you’ll enjoy a beautiful view over the central part of Radensko Polje, with its wet and marshy meadows that are home to many rare and protected plant and animal species. The trail leads you to the Studenček spring, fed from deep beneath the karst polje, so it never dries up, even in severe drought. In local folklore, the spring water is famed for its healing properties.
Crossing a footbridge, you reach the hedgerows and continue on to a floodplain forest of black alder, where the trail ends. You can return via the same route, and if you prefer, you can skip the ascent to Kopanj on your way back.

Along the route, several informative panels explain the karst phenomena in an easy-to-comprehend way, along with the characteristic local flora and fauna, and the importance of wetlands and biodiversity conservation. Feel free to bring binoculars to watch birds or other wildlife in the park. Children will enjoy the fun riddles and puzzles featured on the panels along the path.

Please note: wear appropriate footwear, and waterproof shoes are especially recommended in wet weather.
