Scenic Peak with a Touch of History
Ostri Vrh near Grosuplje is a picturesque hill rising on the edge of the Karstic Radenska planota plateau. From its summit, you are rewarded with stunning views stretching all the way to the Kamnik–Savinja Alps, the Karawanks, parts of the Julian Alps, and the Posavsko hribovje hills. It’s an excellent choice for a short yet enjoyable hike in the Ljubljana hinterland. History buffs can complement their visit by exploring nearby castle ruins. This area also boasts two of the region’s most notable attractions: the scenic Mayor’s Cave (Županova jama) and one of Slovenia’s best-preserved anti-Turkish fortified camps, Tabor nad Cerovim.

One of the most popular starting points for ascending Ostri Vrh is the village of Čušperk near Grosuplje. The trail begins at a parking area beside the railway line, where you’ll first notice an old stone structure – Martinovčeva apnenica lime kiln – preserving the memory of historic lime production in this region.
The first signpost will direct you further along the route to Ostri vrh, where you'll choose between two paths leading into the forest: the right-hand path follows mostly woodland trails and forest roads, while the left takes a gravel road. We recommend the right path, which is a little steeper and shorter, but far more varied and mostly avoids any motorised vehicles. Markings guide you at junctions, though we advise checking the GPX track for orientation in the first section. Both routes rejoin shortly before the final stretch to Ostri vrh, reached when the forest opens onto a gently sloping plateau.
At the summit, you’ll find a tall flagpole flying the Slovenian flag, along with picnic tables and benches perfect for resting and taking in the views.
If you’ve had enough walking, you can return to your starting point the same way (or via the gravel road). For those keen to explore a little further, we suggest visiting the nearby ruins of the former Čušperk Castle.
From Ostri vrh, descend back to the gravel road and follow the signposts to Stari grad – the rocky hill crowned by the castle ruins. Upon reaching a solitary farm, head across the meadow and into the forest, where a pleasant path leads you to the well-preserved walls of the former castle. The walk from the junction to Ostri vrh takes about 20 minutes. An information board at the site details the castle’s history, which dates back to the 12th century.
Descent: via the ascent path (or the gravel road).
