Mysterious Springs in the Heart of Ljubljana Marshes

The marsh springs (barjanska okna) are springs located within Ljubljana Marshes and its edges. Most are found along the border between the gravel deposits of the Iška River and the marshes. Have you ever wondered why water surfaces in exactly these places? Did you know that the marsh springs were once considerably larger than they are today? What do you think is the significance of these water phenomena? Explore the themed Marshland Windows Trail!

When the Ljubljana Marshes were still covered by a thick layer of peat moss, larger open water areas known as marsh springs appeared on the surface. Such large water bodies no longer exist today, but more than 50 springs can still be found along the boundary of the gravel deposits from rivers like the Iška.

The Marsh Springs Trail can be started from two trailheads: the villages of Podkraj or Lipe. Among the most interesting stops are the viewing platform at Strahomerska okna, where you’ll find a picturesque presentation about the marsh springs on interpretive panels, along with three fun puzzles. Additional information about the trail and its features is available on information boards along the route.
The trail is suitable for walking or cycling.
