Trail along the Iška River – Okljuk, Ljubljana Marshes
Discover one of the most beautiful rivers in the Ljubljana hinterland.
Among the rivers surrounding Ljubljana, the Iška stands out as one of the most stunning, inviting visitors to cool off in its pristine natural setting during summer. Its lively course takes you through the wild Iški vintgar gorge, across fertile Iški vršaj hills, and through the Ljubljana Marshes. Explore its unique features on this themed trail!
The Trail Along the Iška River – Okljuk is a somewhat longer route (13 km) but a beautiful trail through a lesser-known, naturally rich part of the Ljubljana Marshes. On this stretch, the Iška forms picturesque meanders as its channel gently flows toward the Ljubljanica River. The trail links the Iški vintgar gorge, where the Iška runs through a narrow canyon, to its outlet near the village of Lipe.
The predominantly flat trail follows gravel cart tracks, woodland paths, and meadow edges. It’s suitable for both walkers and recreational cyclists, especially those who enjoy observing nature and seeking peace far away from the busy life of the cities and towns. Along the route, information points explain the area’s ecological importance, habitats for various birds, amphibians, and rare plants, and the significance of preserving the river’s natural flow.
