Ljubljana’s Cultural Quarters

Ljubljana’s best-known sights are hardly short of attention. That is why we also turn the spotlight on the quarters where the city gets on with everyday life. Each has a character and stories of its own, and plenty of reasons for visitors to leave the well-trodden routes.

Together with local partners, we develop cultural and creative quarters and share their stories with residents and visitors. On Visit Ljubljana, we introduce their architecture, art, cultural venues, creators, independent shops, places to eat and green corners. Themed walks help people discover stories that rarely compete with the major sights for attention.

When the quarters open their doors, they often mean it quite literally. Together with local partners, we support and promote events such as Šiška Open, Moste Open, Soteska Open, Križevniška Neighbours’ Day, the Young Lions festival and Poljanska fest. Culture steps outside, neighbours take to the streets and visitors abandon the most predictable routes for a while.

This draws visitors into different parts of Ljubljana, eases pressure on the city centre and directs more attention and opportunities towards other neighbourhoods. Visitors meet the Ljubljana people actually live in, while local creatives, cultural institutions, shops and restaurants gain visibility and new opportunities to grow.

The city centre benefits too, as it no longer has to carry the full weight of tourism on its admittedly rather photogenic shoulders. The only thing left behind is the idea that Ljubljana ends at the Triple Bridge. Below are seven reasons to keep exploring.
