Ljubljana is small enough to feel easy, but much bigger than its postcard views.

Yes, start with the castle, the river, the bridges and the Old Town. They are famous for a reason. But do not stop there. Ljubljana is also a city of neighbourhoods, cultural quarters, green paths, creative studios, local markets, makers, community spaces, events and unexpected corners that reveal how the city really lives.

Follow the river. Take a bus or a bike. Walk into a neighbourhood you have not heard of yet. Meet a local creator, join a workshop, visit a cultural venue, taste something seasonal or spend the afternoon in one of the city’s green spaces.

The best things to do in Ljubljana are not all in one place. That is the fun of it.

Start with the classics

The Old Town is a natural first stop, especially if this is your first visit.

Walk along the Ljubljanica River, cross the bridges, visit Prešeren Square, stop at the Central Market and look up to Ljubljana Castle. The city centre is compact, beautiful and full of stories. It gives you the first taste of Ljubljana, but only the first.

Once you have met the classics, keep going.

Good for: first-time visitors, short stays, photos, cafés
How long: 2 to 3 hours

Explore Ljubljana’s cultural quarters

This is where Ljubljana stretches beyond the obvious.

Each cultural quarter has its own rhythm, people and personality. Šiška brings contemporary culture, music and urban energy. Tabor feels local, open and creative. Križevniška is small, charming and full of artistic spirit. Soteska, Moste and Poljane reveal another side of the city, with community spaces, independent venues, local stories and everyday Ljubljana.

These are places where visitors can feel the city as locals do, not only admire it from the outside.

Good for: culture lovers, repeat visitors, urban explorers, curious walkers
How long: 2 hours to a day

Follow creativity across the city

Ljubljana’s creative side is not kept behind one museum door.

It lives in studios, workshops, galleries, small shops, cultural venues and neighbourhood spaces across the city. Through Creative Ljubljana, visitors can meet designers, artists, craftspeople and makers who connect tradition with fresh ideas.

This is a good way to explore Ljubljana more slowly and more personally. You may begin in the centre, but the story often leads elsewhere.

Good for: design lovers, creative travellers, local stories, meaningful souvenirs
How long: 2 hours to half a day

Make something with local makers

Some of the best city memories happen when you stop looking and start doing.

Join a creative handicraft workshop and meet local artisans who keep traditional skills alive in contemporary ways. Try pottery, weaving, letterpress printing, jewellery making, silversmithery/goldsmithery, umbrella repair or another hands-on experience.

You will leave with more than an object. You will leave with a story about the person who helped you make it, the craft behind it and the city around it.

Good for: rainy days, couples, families, small groups, curious travellers
How long: 2 to 4 hours

Go green, not just central

Ljubljana is one of Europe’s greenest capitals, and its green side goes far beyond a pretty park.

Tivoli is close to the centre, but it is only the beginning. Walk up to Rožnik, cycle through the city, follow riverside paths, discover quieter green areas or use Ljubljana as a base for nature experiences in Central Slovenia. The city makes it easy to move from urban culture to trees, hills and open air.

Pack comfortable shoes. Ljubljana rewards detours.

Good for: families, active visitors, slow travel, nature lovers
How long: 1 hour to full day

Taste Ljubljana beyond the obvious

Food in Ljubljana starts at the Central Market, but it does not end there.

Try local dishes, seasonal produce and Slovenian wines. Visit neighbourhood cafés, restaurants, markets and food events. Join a food tour or follow local recommendations beyond the busiest streets. Ljubljana’s food story is best when it includes both the well-known stops and the places where locals return.

Good for: food lovers, couples, groups, rainy days
How long: 2 hours to half a day

Check what’s on in every part of the city

Ljubljana likes to keep a busy calendar.

Concerts, festivals, exhibitions, theatre, open-air cinema, food markets, family activities, neighbourhood events and seasonal celebrations happen throughout the city. Before you arrive, check what is on. While you are here, check again. The event that changes your plans may not be in the place you expected.

Good for: evening plans, families, local atmosphere, culture
How long: depends on the event

Follow the river, then keep going

The Ljubljanica River is one of the easiest ways to orient yourself in Ljubljana.

Walk along the riverbanks, take a boat ride, cross the bridges and enjoy the terraces. Then use the river as a starting point, not a border. From here, continue toward green spaces, cultural quarters, markets, galleries and neighbourhoods. Ljubljana is compact enough to explore easily, but varied enough to surprise you when you leave the main route.

Good for: relaxed sightseeing, first-time visitors, couples, families
How long: 45 minutes to half a day

Look for Plečnik across the city

Plečnik is not only a name in guidebooks. He is part of the city’s everyday landscape.

His bridges, market arcades, river embankments, the National and University Library, churches, urban details and public spaces shaped Ljubljana in ways that still guide how people move, meet and spend time. Following Plečnik is a good way to connect the city centre with other parts of Ljubljana and understand the city as a whole.

Think of it as a treasure hunt, but with columns, lamps and very elegant stonework.

Good for: architecture, design, culture, history
How long: 2 to 4 hours
