You may want to give Ljubljana a miss if you expect a European capital to wear you out on the very first day.
If you need an underground system to get from one landmark to the next. If a city does not feel important enough without rows of skyscrapers, a king in the main square and traffic reminding you at least three times a day that you are in a metropolis.
Ljubljana cannot offer you that.
What it can offer is one of the largest pedestrian zones in the European Union, 542 square metres of green space per resident, three UNESCO connections, the world’s oldest wooden wheel with an axle, thousands of beehives and a main square watched over by a poet rather than a king or military commander.
That is an almost suspicious number of reasons for a city of its size to feel confident.
And then, without the slightest embarrassment, it also declares itself the most beautiful city in the world.
Discover why it is so difficult to disagree.
It may sound a little bold. Then you come here.

MMM STORIES: On Bees and Honey
Si sapis, sis apis – if you are wise, be like a bee, says a Latin proverb that Slovenians follow almost unconsciously every day. However, it often seems that we focus only on one aspect of bee behaviour - diligence and docility, the main attributes of the indigenous Carniolan honey bee, which was classified as a separate subspecies in the zoological classification of honey bees as far back as 1879. After almost 150 years, has the time come to adapt this definition (and our own mindset) and focus on qualities that move away from the concept of humility and modesty? To proudly raise our heads and proclaim that the Carniolan honey bee – just like us – is committed, determined, adaptable and, above all, resilient? Isn't it time we internalized another virtue of the Carniolan honey bee – its excellent sense of orientation – and set off on a new path?

Špela and Rene Šuc (Gostilna pri Mari)
We spoke with Špela Šuc and Rene Šuc, the third generation to carry on the story of the family-run Gostilna pri Mari in Kamnik pod Krimom. They shared their approach to blending traditional Slovenian cuisine with contemporary hospitality and sommelier expertise, finding inspiration for new interpretations of age-old recipes, and maintaining a balance between family and business life.
We learned how each of their independent career paths eventually led them back home, where, together with their family, they welcome guests who know that a roughly 30-minute drive or 15-minute train journey from Ljubljana will be rewarded, time and again, with a slightly refreshed, carefully considered and complete culinary experience. -

Locals recommend
When we say, "Let's go for coffee!", we don't mean we're going to have a black, bitter, caffeinated drink originating from Ethiopia, which has (even more successfully than the British) colonised the entire world. No. What we mean is: "Let's go somewhere and sit for hours while ordering some (non-alcoholic) drink."
Katarina is an anthropologist who loves exploring different cultures and lifestyles. Although Ljubljana isn't her favourite city in the world, she has grown fond of its many excellent cafés – and compiled her favourites in an article.
