An awe-inspiring hike to make your heart skip a beat: Kamniško Sedlo
With strikingly beautiful panoramic views, an enchanting green meadow stretches between towering peaks to the east and west and continues into a steep drop to the glacial Logar Valley to the north. At 1,900 m, Kamniško Sedlo is one of those easy half-day hikes that ends on a sunny terrace of a friendly hut in the middle of a mountain idyll, while also connecting with the neighbouring peaks through a myriad of trails. The best part? It’s less than 40 km from Ljubljana!

Roaming the flowering meadows in the Ljubljana Marshes
In the warm sunrise light, endless meadows speckled with purple bell-shaped flowers of the leper lily (Fritillaria Meleagris) and other little wild flowers sparkle in morning dew. Not too far away, deer chew on spring goodies, unaffected by the passing visitors. And as birds continue with their heart-warming melodies, I follow lonely paths deeper into the Ljubljana Marshes, my mind off and the batteries-recharging mood on.

Skiing, sledding and hiking in the winter idyll on Krvavec
It happens that the second largest ski centre in Slovenia is really close to Ljubljana. Just 25 km away either by car or a direct bus from Ljubljana. Yet, it’s not just the vicinity that places Krvavec as Ljubljana’s top choice, but also its unique position on the brink of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, 30 km of ski runs, a snow park, night sledding, and, finally, stunning hiking trails.

A winter fairy tale and stunning scenery above Vrhnika
As fog lingers among the busy streets of Ljubljana, a small town on the south-western edge of the Ljubljana Moors and its embracing rolling hills lure young families, trail runners and other adventurers for a nice day in the sun. One of the most visited hills above Vrhnika might be small in size but totally and utterly captivating.

Welcome to a unique Alpine pasture near Ljubljana: Velika Planina
Vast plains underneath a playground of jagged peaks, slow paths, unique oval huts for shepherds, friendly people and good food. Velika Planina, arguably the biggest and oldest shepherds’ settlement in Europe that remains active up to date, is a hiking paradise for families, photographers, and those who seek a relaxing day out in unspoilt nature.

Exploring Ljubljanica river by kayak
The best thing about Ljubljana is you can wander around its picturesque and cobbled narrow streets in the old town and just few minutes later you can already be having a true wilderness adventure.

Cycling around Ljubljana on the Trail of Remembrance and Comradeship
Under the bracing shade of trees, stretching 40 kilometres around Ljubljana, it winds an enchanting mostly car-free trail of historic importance. If the Trail of Remembrance and Comradeship or simply just POT is a popular walking, jogging and cycling route for outdoor enthusiasts, it also serves as a reminder of where the city used to be enclosed during the World War II.

Short but sweet: Stari Grad and its amazing views of the Alps
I’d driven past it many times, always towards jagged mountain peaks of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, and so it wasn’t until two years ago when I finally decided to visit Stari Grad with my family. As it turned out, it’s one of the coolest and most scenic short hikes in Slovenia. It’s a family-friendly 35-minute trail that teaches about wildlife and nature, and ends with amazing views over the Alps and Kamnik. A must-go if you’re in town!

Hiking safety: everything you need to know before heading out to the mountains
I love mountains. I love the energy, the solitude, the vastness, and the wildlife. And I love the challenge. Finding yourself without getting lost. Firing a passion without getting burnt. While I strongly believe everyone should venture out to collect their own experiences, there are ways to minimise the risks.
